Ski Benches – In Memoriam & Morinville Fish and Game Society
Some materials carry a story long before they reach the workshop.
In this case, a collection of old skis—donated to an Edmonton ski shop and passed along to the Men’s Shed—became the starting point for something entirely new. With a bit of vision and care, those well-used pieces were given a second life.
Members removed the bindings, filled the holes, sanded down sharp edges, and cleaned each ski before shaping them into a bench design that balances character with function. What began as repurposed materials gradually took on a new purpose.
Three benches have come from this project, each with its own meaning.

One was created and donated to the Morinville Fish and Game Society, where it will be part of a silent auction fundraiser—supporting another local organization through shared effort.
Another was built in memoriam for a Morinville resident, using his late wife’s skis. Finished with a brass plaque, it stands as a deeply personal piece—both a tribute and a place to sit with memory.
A third bench is currently being completed and will be offered for sale to the public, with plans to have it on display at upcoming 2026 community events.
Projects like this reflect the range of what can come out of the Shed—from practical builds to pieces that carry personal and community meaning. It’s not just about making something new, but about recognizing what’s already there and giving it a different kind of life.
