Grain Elevator Yard Ornaments

Some projects grow naturally from what’s already been built—shaped by the people who see themselves in them.

Our solar lighthouses, originally inspired by community members who brought a piece of the East Coast with them to Alberta, sparked a new idea. For many here, the same sense of place and memory is tied not to the ocean—but to grain elevators that once marked the skyline of small prairie towns.

From that, a custom project took form.

These grain elevator yard ornaments are a reimagining of our lighthouse designs, adapted to reflect a different kind of local nostalgia. Each piece can be customized with the name of a town—just as the original elevators once were—making them both personal and familiar.

What began as a request has become an enjoyable and creative extension of the work in the shop. There’s something meaningful in translating one symbol into another, while still holding onto the intention behind it.

Like the lighthouses, these pieces are designed for outdoor display—bringing a quiet presence to a yard or porch. They can also be adapted into functional birdhouses, adding another layer of purpose to the design.

Projects like this show how ideas evolve within the Shed—guided not just by skill, but by the stories and memories people want to carry forward.

If you’d like to support the Men’s Shed and the work we do in the community, many of our handcrafted items are available for purchase through current inventory or custom order.
