Compost Bins for Morinville Community Gardens
Sometimes a good project begins with a simple conversation—and a shared sense that something could work better.
The Morinville Community Gardens had been using traditional wooden compost bins, but they were static and difficult to turn, making the process less efficient than it could be. Through connections between garden members and Men’s Shed members, the need for a better solution became clear.
From there, an idea took shape.

The Shed designed a new style of compost bin using a 45-gallon plastic drum, mounted on wheels and set into an elevated stand. The design allows the compost to be easily turned and positioned high enough to empty directly into a wheelbarrow—simple improvements that make a big difference in daily use.
In 2025, one unit was built as a trial. After proving successful, plans are now underway to add two more in 2026.
This project was fully supported by the Men’s Shed, with members sourcing materials and contributing the labour and workshop space needed to bring the design to life. It’s a practical example of what can happen when skills and community needs meet in the right way.
The Morinville Community Gardens, run by the local United Church, continue to benefit from these improvements—making composting more accessible, efficient, and sustainable for everyone involved.
Projects like this reflect a quiet kind of progress—built by hand, shaped by collaboration, and rooted in community.
